What happens at my Child’s 1st podiatry appointment?

At your child’s first visit the podiatrist will look at the presenting complaint which may include assessment of the following:
- The way your child walks and stands
- Your child’s current activity levels and requirements
- You child’s neurological and dermatological status
- Their joint range of motion, muscle strength and function in your feet and lower limbs
- Gross motor skills and development & milestones
- Your child’s footwear
Upon evaluation of the presenting complaint we will provide the treatment needed & advise you on any changes that may need to be made; including changes to footwear or incorporating stretching, strengthening or gross motor skills. Orthotics (shoe inserts) or gait plates will be prescribed if necessary, but good, supportive footwear is the first place to start.
At your child’s 1st visit the podiatrist will ask about their general health including any existing or previous conditions or injuries, growth & development & any relevant birth or sleeping information.
We will discuss the treatment plan and needs for reassessment or follow up care. This may be at variable time periods, ongoing or until we are certain that your child is free of problems.
If your child requires a referral to another health professional we can also provide you with a referral, this includes imaging such as x-rays.
