Can Orthotic Treatment Help?
Orthotics are shoe inserts designed to support, align, or improve the function of the foot. There are many different types of orthotics, ranging from sports styles to slim devices that can be fitted into a dress shoe. They are biomechanically designed to support the natural shape of your feet, and protect them from any abnormal stresses of everyday activity.
When functioning properly, our feet are our body’s natural shock absorbers and help to correctly align the rest of the body. However, if the foot is not aligned properly problems can arise in the ankle, knee, leg, and back.
Orthotic treatment can help to alleviate the following:
- Heel pain
- Shin pain
- Plantar Fasciitis
- Achilles tendon injuries
- Arch pain
- Bunions
- Knee pain
- Arthritis
- Back / Hip pain
- Muscle fatigue
Orthotics have helped many people to walk pain free and return to exercise by providing consistent postural control. They are also very beneficial if you have an occupation that requires high levels of standing or walking.
A podiatrist can prescribe you with a custom made orthotic, and will carry out a full clinical assessment of your foot and gait (running/walking) pattern prior to prescription. You may also be given a stretching and strengthening regime to compliment the orthotic treatment.
You can buy generic styles of orthotics at pharmacies and various sporting outlets; however they are not designed specifically for your foot type and may cause further problems.
